Windows Phone (Mango) DB Engines Performance Testing

Abstracts I am working on a Windows Phone application that requires some database to store information. I know a couples of DB engines for Windows Phone (SQL CE, Sterling DB, Siaqodb, ) but I have not found any performance testing of such software. So, I decided to compare SQL CE and Sterling DB. I am going to use set of test queries (insert/delete/select) to measure performance. I will perform three attempts and will calculate average value. Database structure     The database structure is as simple as possible. Companies has orders and...

Software Development Life Cycle for Windows Phone and Blackberry/Pyxis Platforms Session

About a month ago I presented a session on development specifics for Windows Phone and Blackberry/Pyxis platforms. This presentation was a generalization of my mobile experience with Windows Phone and Blackberry/Pyxis platforms. You can download presentation with detailed notes here. Also, you can watch video, that was prepared for the session, and where I compare implementation of a screen for displaying list of news for both platforms.   I hope, it will help you! Getting ready for Exam 70-599: Designing and Developing Windows Phone 7 Applications. Helpful Links and Resources

Intro About a month ago, Microsoft announced that they published beta exam 71-599 for Windows Phone developers. Anyone, who registered for that exam would be able to pass it for free. But anyway, everyone should be ready for that exam, should read some training materials etc. I have prepared links to useful MSDN (in most cases) resources that should help you prepare to that exam. If you have any comments, let me know Designing Data Access Strategies Send and receive data. Connecting to Web and Data Services for Windows Phone ...

Announcement of future posts

Someone can say that I write blog posts not often. Well, probably, that makes sense. On the other side of coin, I spend great deal of time on projects that will become a basis for my posts. I want to provide in-depth analysis of a problematic area and, as a result, spend much time on implementation. In that post I would like to announce what major articles I am going to publish for next couple of months. Specifics of Windows Phone development (for Silverlight developers who want to start developing for WP7) (presentation) ...

The Prism Team Needs Your Help

Some time ago I mentioned in a tweet that the work on the Prism library was stopped right after publishing Prism 4. Right after that I received a tweet from Ade Miller (former dev lead at patterns & practices) and from Bob Brumfield (work at patterns & practices on Prism, Enterprise Library and Windows Phone 7 guidance). The sense of their tweets is Prism is alive, there are no commits in repository because the Prism team can’t work the whole year on the project and at the moment they plan their activities for the financial year 2012. Also,...

Problems With Sharing Windows Phone 7 Applications Within A Large Group Of Beta Testers

Abstract I work for a huge media company in a mobility team as a project coordinator. At the moment, I work on an application for Blackberry and have established workflow for developing and testing new builds. The team includes great number of product owners who work as testers and as customers at the same time. The Blackberry platform provides all required possibilities to have tested applications by any number of testers/product owners. You just need to compile COD files and sign them at RIM to be able to install on any Blackberry device/simulator. Let’s have a look at...

Windows Phone Looping Selector for Digits

Abstracts Windows Phone controls toolkit has a great control for displaying date/time (DatePicker and TimePicker). Fortunately, it is quite easy to build based on them a control that allows selecting digits. For example, I am working on a solution to allow users select metric parameters – height, width, cost etc. As a result, I implemented own control based on LoopingSelector and ILoopingSelectorDataSource. Implementation DatePicker and TimePicker controls are a set of primitive controls – box for displaying data, additional PhonePage and looping selectors themselves. If you activate a Picker, you will see the next screen: ...

Ownership of HTC HD7 (Windows Phone 7) and My Impressions

I have had HTC HD7 since December of 2010. The first impression I experienced when I turned on the device was how fresh, cool, clean and quick UI was. I was happy to not seeing gradients, unnecessary borders and lines in lists. To be honest, I have the same feeling now, after two months of ownership of the device. Unfortunately (I know, it’s unavoidable for the first release of any new device), the phone has a bunch of issues. I have no chance to test other models of WP7 phones, so I will not separate issues on device-related...

Bindable Application Bar Extensions for Windows Phone 7

Abstracts Application bar is a very important way to control your application and and execute additional actions. However, this control has several limitations. First of all, I would like to have collapsible application bar. Some screens need that control but it is not used very often. For example, WinPhone Internet Explorer – I do not use favourites or tabs commands five times per minute and would like to be able to hide/show it. But there is no way to do it. The second limitation of AppBar is it is not bindable. At all. You can bind neither properties...

Future of Myself and My Blog

Everything changes and nothing remains still. (Heraclitus, c. 535–c. 475 BCE) Now I work at a mobile department of one of the biggest media corporation. And I hope, my future will be tied with mobile technologies. Right now I am working on a mobile application for a Blackberry device but I am absolutely sure that my main projects will be based on the WindowsPhone7 platform. It does not matter whether I will work as a developer/architect or as a project manager (the last one is highly probable). In several days I am going to start my first pilot...

XAPs Minifier. An Add-on to Visual Studio 2010 to Optimize and Minimize Size of Xap Files

Abstract I work at Silverlight applications every day and do releases every week or two. Some of them I publish on my blog other are published on other web resources. As a rule, I use MVVM as a basic pattern for Silverlight applications to divide them on logical parts, pack into XAP files and load on demand. XAP file is a logical item in any Silverlight application and it contains assemblies and app manifest. During the work I have noticed majority of XAP files contain duplicated assemblies. For example, if I...

Windows Phone 7 Sound Track

Microsoft revealed Windows Phone 7 Application Platform at the MIX10 conference. Also, the Windows Phone 7 for Developers and Windows Phone 7 Series web sites were launched. Initially, Microsoft presented an animated trailer which described main functions of the device. You could see it on the main page of the Windows Phone 7 Series web site. Besides watching animation, you could listen to a nice sound track. I called it Windows Phone 7 Soundtrack and decided to pull it out. At the beginning I thought that the soundtrack is embedded into a xap file. I downloaded it...
